Quiet side street in Tbilisi

TBILISI is the capital of the Republic of Georgia, founded traditionally by King Vakhtang Gorgasali in the 5th century.

The style of the houses in the quiet, leafy suburbs is particularly photogenic. Many of the buildings, with their elegant wooden balconies, date from the early 19th century, after the mass destruction of the city in 1795 by Aga Mohammad Khan, Shah of Persia.

The Mtkvari River flows briskly through the Georgian capital, helping to create the wonderful view from the fortress, crowned by an array of churches, mosques and even synagogues visible above the elegant 18th century buildings which surround them.
