Marmashen

SHIRAK is the coldest province in Armenia, situated to the north-west of Aragats, in the north-west corner of Armenia. It contains the city of Gyumri, returning to its former splendour and prominence after the major earthquake of 1988.

Gyumri

Marmashen, dating from the 10th century, is a 10 kilometre drive north of Gyumri town centre, in pretty surroundings next to the Akhuryan River.

A busy morning in the main square in Gyumri, formerly the second city in Armenia, and presently re-establishing itself with some admirable renovation.
