Although now known as the Minuchihr Mosque, calculated to be the first Turkish mosque in Anatolia, there are many reasons to believe that the building was originally Armenian from the reign of Ashot III, and that the mosque was built on the remains of a ruined church.

The building of the cathedral at Ani was commenced in the 10th century by King Smbat II and finally fell out of use in the 14th century, after its partial collapse in an earthquake.
