Kars, view of Surb Arkelots from the citadel

Kars is yet another former Armenian capital, ruling an Armenian kingdom immediately before the transferance of the capital to the legendary city of Ani.

Below: Another view towards the imposing citadel.

Kars, Surb Arkelots (Holy Apostles)

The citadel was originally built and established by the Bagratuni dynasty in the 10th century, when Kars became the capital of an Armenian kingdom. It is still possible to ascend it, and from the summit, there is a good panorama of the town below.

The church was built in the 10th century, and after being converted into a mosque by the Turks in the 16th century, was converted again by the Russians, this time into an Orthodox Church when they captured the city in 1877.
