ARAGATSOTN, the foot of Mount Aragats. The chief town is the historical, attractive town of Ashtarak, situated at a strategic crossing place of the Kasagh River.

Aparan, famous for the battle in the
20th century against the Turks, with a monument to Dro, the famed
Armenian military leader and a 5th century church, one of the oldest
in the country. Aparan is also the commercial centre for the Yezdis,
who predominate many of the local villages in the region.

The monastery of Tegher, near Amberd
on the south slopes of Mount Aragats. This large dark-coloured structure
of basalt also commands excellent views onto the plain below to the
south.
